From an early age, I’ve loved telling stories. In fact, as a kid, I often told stories to myself—out loud—on the school playground. Needless to say, this didn’t earn me many friends! On the plus side, I learned to enjoy my own company—something that still rings true to this day. At the same time, though, I wanted deeply to connect with others, but I didn’t know where to start.
When I started college, I moved from my tiny hometown in Texas to the city of Los Angeles, hoping to reinvent myself. It took a few years, but eventually I shed my identity of awkward bookworm as I discovered psychedelics and underground dance parties (well, I was still kind of awkward, but at least I was having fun). I finally started to experience those connections with others that I craved and feel more connected to myself as well. I also discovered how dance can be a powerful tool for therapy, meditation, and manifestation, which I still use to this day!
Eventually, I grew tired of the party lifestyle and its diminishing returns. But leaving the scene was kind of like when I finished school, ending my dream of becoming a career student. Everything felt stagnant and empty.
Then I discovered spirituality. Like many on the spiritual journey, I started with the main objective of trying to fix all the things I didn’t like about myself and my life. Gradually I realized that no, actually, spirituality is about integrating everything that makes you feel alive, that lights your soul on fire, so every day feels awesome, and then you can show up for others in a more inspiring way. And when you do face challenges, you tackle them with zest, knowing that the challenges themselves contain rich lessons and opportunities for growth (even if you don’t realize it at the moment).
One constant that has remained for me over the years is writing, whether fiction, blogging, or copywriting. These days I mostly write on a blockchain platform called peakD, but you can also find my work on Medium. Currently, I see writing as a way to take moments that can be seen as banal, humiliating, or painful and find the humor and inspiration in them. Like alchemy. That’s how Generate Magic was born. It’s about making magic out of EVERY moment—even the crappy ones—and using the raw materials of your life to weave an awesome tapestry.
For most of my life, writing has been my primary mode of expression. But recently I started feeling called to express myself and impact others in other ways. That’s when I decided to step into coaching. While this is a new venture (really, ADventure!) for me in one sense, at the same time, it’s an accumulation of everything I’ve experienced over my lifetime. While teaching and tutoring has provided direct experience in coaching, life itself has instilled in me the wisdom to now share what I’ve learned with others.
I know what it’s like to feel hopeless, disillusioned, and apathetic. I also know what it’s like to feel thrilled to be alive. To be in awe of life’s unfolding. To constantly feel ecstatic—not for any particular reason, just because. I also know what it’s like to move from professional victim to engineer of your life.
